Turn a broad hardening goal into a manageable review.

Define the environment

Start by identifying which systems are in scope, what they support, and who maintains them. A shared understanding of critical workloads and maintenance constraints gives a hardening review a useful boundary.

Review one area at a time

Group the review into access, running services, configuration, patching and visibility. For each area, record the intended state, the current observation and any unanswered questions. This makes it easier to separate a verified issue from an assumption.

Protect operational continuity

Agree the change process before making configuration changes. Include application validation, a maintenance window where needed, and a recovery plan. Hardening should be considered alongside the reliability requirements of the system.

Leave a maintainable record

Capture what changed, why it changed and who owns the ongoing check. A concise baseline can help future administrators understand which settings are intentional and where a new exception needs review.

Every environment is different. Agree technical changes with the people responsible for your systems.
